Minister for Mines, Geology and Excise, Kollu Ravindra, reiterated on Wednesday that the State government would not hesitate to initiate stringent action to curb illegal mining activities, adding that an action plan would be prepared to restore the mining sector to its former strength. He further assured the stakeholders that pending applications related to mining operations would be cleared on a war footing.
Addressing a review meeting at the Collectorate here, after inspecting the granite quarries in Gudipala mandal, the Minister said that the mining industry faced severe difficulties over the last five years due to administrative bottlenecks and excessive penalties. “After the NDA government assumed office, several corrective measures were introduced, helping the sector regain momentum. The State’s mining revenue has risen to nearly ₹3,000 crore, reflecting around 40% growth,” Mr. Ravindra said.
The Minister maintained that special plans were being formulated for the development of mineral resources such as limestone, iron ore, and beach sand. A dedicated policy was being prepared to promote rare earth minerals, which are witnessing increasing demand in global markets. Twelve mineral blocks have already been identified for phased auction and development, he said.
Focusing on Chittoor district’s mining profile, Mr. Ravindra said that Chittoor holds 682 mining leases, but only about half are currently operational. “Despite having the presence of more than 500 mineral-based industries in Chittoor, several units have remained inactive due to various constraints. A special committee will be formed to identify these issues and recommend solutions,” the Minister said.
