Authorities in Crete are facing a significant increase in migrant arrivals, with a notable shift in smuggling tactics. Over the past few weeks, smugglers have been distributing arrivals across the entire southern coastline of Crete, from Gavdos to Ierapetra. From June 1st to Sunday evening, authorities managed 31 incidents involving 1,384 individuals, bringing the total for the year to 157 incidents and 7,000 arrivals. The temporary reception facility in Agia is emptying every two to three days due to the constant influx.
The surge in migrant arrivals and the proposed establishment of a new temporary reception facility near Heraklion's airport are raising concerns among tourism stakeholders about potential long-term negative impacts on the island's vital tourism sector.
