Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) is considering a proposal to widen the academic scope of its Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad, Alappuzha, by offering a variety of niche undergraduate programmes.

The move to consider offering demand-based courses in tune with the changing requirements of the job-providing sectors is part of efforts to attract more students to the institution. Senior varsity officials said they had plans to start at least a few of such undergraduate programmes from the academic year 2027-28.

The areas of study under consideration include commerce, business studies, and finance. A final decision would be taken after detailed discussions on various aspects related to the proposal and analysing the potential of niche programmes, they said.

The authorities pointed out that the Kuttanad campus needed an uplift, and the proposal to concentrate on starting new undergraduate programmes might help in achieving it. Students from areas close to the institution would also get an opportunity to pursue undergraduate programmes in innovative fields.

Discussions will be held on introducing programmes tailor-made for young learners. The aim is to increase enrolment and make the campus self-sustaining, they said.

The varsity’s Budget for 2026-27 had included a proposal to develop the institution into a rural campus as part of efforts to ensure an inclusive and regionally balanced growth.
