An extensive whale cemetery has been discovered in the Indian Ocean's Diamantina Zone, spanning approximately 1,200 kilometers. Researchers identified 485 fossil sites and five active whale fall communities, representing the deepest and most extensive accumulation of whale fossils and carcasses documented to date. The findings offer a unique glimpse into marine mammal evolution over the past 5.3 million years. The study, published in Nature, details active communities found at depths between 4,625 and 6,789 meters, supporting diverse life forms like bone-eating worms and chemosynthetic bacteria. Some of these communities extend the known depth limits for such habitats by over 2,500 meters.
This discovery provides invaluable insights into the deep-sea ecosystem and the long-term evolutionary history of whales, potentially revealing new species and understanding ancient climate conditions.
