Brazil's government has registered the 'PIX' brand as "high renown" with the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI). This designation offers the highest level of legal protection for the real-time payment system within Brazil. The move follows recent accusations from the United States that PIX unfairly favors Brazilian companies over American competitors. US officials claim Brazil's Central Bank acts as both regulator and operator, creating an uneven playing field. Brazil's Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade stated the registration ensures exclusive use of the PIX mark nationwide. This action by Brazil underscores its commitment to safeguarding its domestic digital payment infrastructure amidst international scrutiny.
This registration matters because it aims to protect Brazil's successful PIX payment system from foreign challenges and ensure its exclusive use within the country, highlighting national economic interests.
