Cyprus's interior ministry has defended its housing policy, emphasizing it as a top government priority aimed at assisting residents, especially young people, in obtaining homes. This response comes after the opposition party, Democratic Rally (Disy), criticized the government's measures as insufficient to address the housing crisis. The ministry stated that solving the housing issue requires time, coordinated policies, and ongoing adaptation, not immediate solutions.
The government highlighted its comprehensive strategy, focusing on increasing housing supply and improving affordability through measures like fast-track licensing, which has already approved approximately 10,000 residential units. Incentive schemes have also boosted building density, with plans for around 2,500 new homes, including affordable units, and grants have been provided to over 1,400 individuals and families, particularly those under 41 and in remote areas.
The government's housing strategy is crucial as it directly impacts the affordability and accessibility of homes, a significant social and economic concern for many citizens, particularly younger generations.
