Neutrinos are the most abundant matter particles in the Universe, but they interact extremely feebly with other matter, making studies of their properties incredibly challenging. Writing in Nature, the JUNO Collaboration1 reports the first results from the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment in Guangdong, China, which measures neutrinos produced by a nuclear reactor. JUNO has made measurements of two parameters associated with the quantum states of neutrinos that are consistent with previous experiments, but has achieved higher precision. This establishes JUNO as a promising facility for pursuing some of the most fundamental questions in particle physics.
