A constitutional amendment proposal (PEC) to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 18 to 16 years old has been approved by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Chamber of Deputies. This proposal, initially introduced in 2015, will now proceed to a special committee for further review. Only after clearing this stage will it be eligible to be debated and voted on by the full chamber.
This decision significantly impacts the juvenile justice system and the rights of young individuals accused of crimes.
