Scientists found that events previously occurring once a century now have a chance of happening every 24 years. This heightened risk is primarily attributed to rising sea levels caused by climate change, compounded by land subsidence and natural variations. Extreme water events, often a combination of storm surges and spring tides, pose a severe threat, potentially leading to devastating floods, property destruction, and loss of life.
This research is crucial for informing the necessary adjustments to coastal defenses, such as raising dikes, to protect against increasingly frequent extreme weather events driven by climate change.
