At least 15 candidates are believed to have benefited directly or indirectly from the illicit financing. Several mayors from various cities are among those being investigated, with suspicious financial activities reportedly escalating in the weeks leading up to the elections, totaling nearly R$10 million in some cases. Investigators found evidence of "off-the-books" accounting and plans to monitor police presence.
