The Supreme Federal Court (STF) held a conciliation hearing to address the long-standing territorial dispute between Mato Grosso and Pará, which concerns an area of approximately 22,000 square kilometers. Mato Grosso is seeking recognition of a portion of this land and a resolution for communities that receive public services from Mato Grosso despite being geographically within Pará. Various proposals were put forth by Mato Grosso representatives, including financial compensation from Pará for services rendered, the creation of an Integrated Development Region (Ride) for shared investment and responsibility, and consultation with affected populations before a final decision.
Pará's representatives maintained that the state would not cede territory and that any discussion should adhere to existing STF demarcations. No agreement was reached during the hearing, and the STF will continue deliberations to find a consensual solution.
This territorial dispute impacts the provision of essential public services and the administrative and legal status of thousands of residents, necessitating a definitive resolution from the STF.
