Global temperatures have reached 1.37°C above pre-industrial levels as of 2025, with human activities being the primary driver. A new report indicates that the planet is on track to surpass the critical 1.5°C warming threshold around 2030 if greenhouse gas emissions persist at their current rates. This alarming trend is characterized by the Earth rapidly accumulating heat, with more energy entering the climate system than leaving it. The study, which bridges gaps between larger IPCC reports, highlights that nearly all warming in the past decade is attributable to human actions. Global greenhouse gas emissions remain at record highs, largely from burning fossil fuels, but also from deforestation and agriculture.
The findings underscore the diminishing window of opportunity to prevent the most severe impacts of climate change by adhering to the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target.
