Alle vijf wethouders in Tiel opgestapt na bericht over mogelijk strafbare feiten

All five aldermen in the Dutch municipality of Tiel have resigned following a newspaper report alleging their involvement in matters of criminal and administrative law. The report, published by NRC, detailed the abrupt departure of the former mayor, Frank van der Meijden, after only a year in office. Two aldermen from the Pro party initially resigned after their calls for an independent investigation were reportedly ignored by their colleagues and the acting mayor.

Subsequently, the remaining three aldermen, representing the VVD and Partij van de Burgers, also stepped down, citing an unsafe working environment created by "suspicions, rumors, and insinuations." The political crisis has halted the formation of a new municipal executive, and the provincial authorities are now involved in determining the next steps.

The mass resignation of the entire executive board creates a governance vacuum and raises serious questions about the integrity and functioning of local government in Tiel.
