Two Hong Kong friends are reportedly abandoning a HK$1 million restoration project for a 1963-64 China Motor Bus (CMB) double-decker, a vintage vehicle that may be sent for recycling. The duo acquired the bus in 2019, intending to bring it back to its former glory, but cite the need to reduce hobby expenses and conserve resources for other restoration efforts as reasons for discontinuing the project. The bus, which still has a functional engine and gearbox, suffers from significant body deterioration. It previously served as a transport for tree-cutting staff and a police watchtower before its retirement in 1998.
This situation highlights the challenges faced in preserving Hong Kong's automotive heritage, particularly for iconic public transport vehicles like the CMB double-deckers.
