EU Households Energy Use Declines for Third Year
European Union households consumed 9.54 million terajoules of energy throughout 2024 , according to Eurostat, marking a marginal decline of 0.2 per cent from the 9.57 million terajoules recorded in 2023. The latest data highlights that residential energy use has now fallen for three consecutive years , following a record peak of 10.98 million terajoules in 2021. The residential sector currently accounts for 26 per cent of the total final energy consumption across the European
Household energy consumption in the European Union saw a slight decrease of 0.2% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching 9.54 million terajoules. This marks the third consecutive year of decline for residential energy use, following a peak in 2021. Natural gas remains the dominant energy source for homes, followed by electricity and then renewables/biofuels. The majority of this energy is used for maintaining thermal comfort, with space heating accounting for over 60% of total household consumption. While energy for space heating and cooking decreased, demand for space cooling and electrical appliances saw notable increases.
The ongoing reduction in household energy consumption, despite rising demand for cooling and appliances, indicates a potential shift in energy efficiency and usage patterns within the EU.
