Chief Justice Sir Buri Kidu has ordered the release of a six-year-old boy from Wabag jail. The child had been sentenced to five months in prison with light labor after being found guilty of stealing K1038. Sir Buri stated that the boy should never have appeared in district court, as children under 14 are not legally culpable for crimes and should be processed through a children's court.
Sir Buri attributed fault to the police, courts, and welfare officers for the child's unlawful detention. He revealed that he has since ordered the release of approximately 20 other children who were also held in jail unconstitutionally, including a 10-year-old charged with stealing a pen.
The incident highlights critical failures in the justice system regarding the treatment of minors, underscoring the importance of adhering to child protection laws and proper judicial procedures for juveniles.
