The fundamental rights of European citizens are being strained by the escalating cost of living, according to the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) in its latest annual report. The study highlights significant increases in property prices and rental costs across the EU, impacting access to adequate housing. The report also points to a rise in online hate speech and challenges faced by non-EU workers in integrating into the labor market.
Director of FRA, Sirpa Rautio, stated that people across the EU are experiencing daily pressures due to the prolonged cost-of-living crisis. The agency's findings indicate that over one in three EU citizens have encountered hate content online, and while regulatory frameworks exist, their enforcement faces difficulties, particularly concerning accountability of major tech platforms. Furthermore, the report notes disparities in labor market integration for non-EU nationals compared to those fleeing the war in Ukraine, despite a general labor shortage within the EU.
The report underscores how economic instability and societal issues like online hate speech and labor discrimination directly threaten the foundational rights and well-being of individuals across Europe.
