Latvia to Draft Diaspora Youth for Defense Service
Starting next year, Latvian citizens living abroad will also be eligible for conscription into the mandatory State Defence Service. According to rough estimates, 1,000 young people in the UK could meet the requirements for national defence service next year; however, interest from the diaspora has been very low so far.
Latvia is set to implement mandatory State Defence Service for its citizens residing overseas, beginning in the upcoming year. This new policy will extend conscription eligibility to young Latvians living abroad. Initial projections suggest that approximately 1,000 individuals in the United Kingdom might be subject to this requirement next year. However, there has been minimal expressed interest from the Latvian diaspora regarding this national service.
This policy aims to bolster national defense capabilities by including all eligible citizens, regardless of their current residence.
