DODOMA: ACROSS Tanzania, more women are starting businesses, accessing loans, joining economic empowerment groups and taking on leadership roles in their communities. This progress is transforming lives, boosting household incomes and contributing to national development. Yet as women continue to break barriers economically, another important conversation is gaining attention, how can women pursue financial independence while still nurturing strong families and raising well-rounded children? This was one of the key messages shared during the Dodoma Regional Women’s Economic Empowerment Forum, held recently alongside Mother’s Day celebrations. Speaking at the event, Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups , Dr Dorothy Gwajima, said that economic success and family responsibility should go hand in hand. She said that while women are increasingly participating in income-generating activities and entrepreneurship, they also remain central figures in shaping the next generation. “A woman is a caregiver, a strong pillar of the family, and an important driver of community and national development,” she said. According to Dr Gwajima, children need more than food, shelter and education. They also need guidance, protection and positive role models. She encouraged women to ensure that the pursuit of economic opportunities does not come at the expense of quality time, emotional support and proper upbringing. Her message resonates with many modern mothers who often find themselves juggling multiple responsibilities. Between work, business ventures, community activities and family obligations, finding balance can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, experts agree that economic empowerment and effective parenting are not competing goals. In fact, financially empowered women are often better positioned to provide opportunities, security and stability for their families. The government, Dr Gwajima said, remains committed to creating an environment where women can thrive both socially and economically through policies and programmes that support gender equality and women’s development. These platforms help women connect with opportunities such as loans, technology, markets and mentorship while encouraging collaboration and the exchange of experiences. Dodoma Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule echoed similar sentiments, encouraging women to use these platforms to strengthen both family and regional economies. “Women have a major role in strengthening social welfare and national development,” she said. For many Tanzanian women, empowerment is no longer just about earning an income. It is about creating a future where families are stronger, children are better supported and communities continue to prosper. As women pursue their dreams and ambitions, perhaps the greatest achievement lies not in choosing between career and family, but in finding ways for both to flourish together.
