A Bangkok court has handed down death sentences to two Chinese Uyghur men for their involvement in the 2015 bombing of the Erawan Shrine. The attack, which occurred in the city's commercial center, resulted in the deaths of 20 people and injured over 100 others.
The defendants, Yusufu Mieraili and Bilal Mohammed, were convicted of premeditated murder and attempted murder. The court cited the severity of the act, which violated multiple laws, as the reason for imposing the maximum penalty. They were acquitted of charges related to a separate bombing incident.
The verdict provides a long-awaited resolution to one of Thailand's deadliest terrorist attacks, impacting victims, their families, and international relations.
