Mongolia Recovers Smuggled Dinosaur Fossils After Two Decades
Mongolia has recovered a rare dinosaur skeleton and a trove of fossils illegally exported two decades ago, authorities said Wednesday, concluding years of efforts to return the palaeontological treasures. The collection includes a Tarbosaurus bataar skeleton, estimated to be more than 50 per cent intact, along with 28 groups of fossilised dinosaur remains originally found in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, according to police. The bones had been illegally taken from Mongolia in 2006
Mongolia has successfully repatriated a significant collection of dinosaur fossils, including a nearly intact Tarbosaurus bataar skeleton, that were illegally exported two decades ago. The fossils, originally discovered in the Gobi Desert, were confiscated by French authorities between 2013 and 2015 as part of efforts to combat the illegal trade of cultural heritage.
After a lengthy repatriation process, the paleontological treasures arrived in Ulaanbaatar on Thursday. They are slated to be housed and studied at Mongolia's new National Museum of Natural History, with plans for eventual public exhibition. Officials emphasized the priceless nature of the fossils and the importance of this recovery for preserving national heritage.
The return of these valuable fossils is a significant victory for Mongolia in reclaiming its natural heritage and underscores international cooperation against the illicit antiquities trade.
