Seventy-five years ago, on June 11, 1951, the Soviet government decided to construct the Kairakkum Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Syr Darya River. This ambitious project aimed to create the largest power station in Central Asia, with an initial capacity of 126,000 kW. Construction began with the establishment of a residential town, followed by the mobilization of resources and personnel from across the Soviet Union.
The Kairakkum HPP became a crucial element in electrifying northern regions of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Its completion in 1957 marked a significant milestone, integrating the region into a unified energy network. The plant was later named "Friendship of Peoples" in recognition of the diverse nationalities involved in its construction.
The Kairakkum HPP played a pivotal role in regional electrification and agricultural development, transforming vast tracts of land through irrigation.
