Twenty persons travelling on a tourist bus were injured after the vehicle hit the side of the road and fell on its side along the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road near Kattery Park in The Nilgiris on Wednesday evening.
According to police, 26 tourists from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh came to Udhagamandalam and Coonoor for sight-seeing. The incident occurred when they were returning to Coimbatore, where they were scheduled to board a train back to Visakhapatnam.
Most of the passengers suffered only minor injuries, and were taken to Coonoor for treatment. However, the driver, identified as Seenu, got trapped inside the wreckage, and it took the rescuers over an hour to get him out. He suffered serious injuries and was referred to Coimbatore for further treatment.
Of the injured, 14 were admitted to a hospital. The others were treated for minor injuries and discharged.
