As the schools across Andhra Pradesh reopen for the new academic year after the summer vacation, the spotlight is on the transformation of the government school at Nidamarru in Mangalagiri constituency, which has grown from a low-performing institution into a model campus, equipped with international-standard facilities.

The change goes beyond infrastructure. The school’s academic performance and public confidence have also turned around. A few years ago, the Nidamarru Zilla Parishad High School was considered a low-performing institution, with its strength only 510. The SSC pass percentage hovered between 45% and 55% over the previous three years.

Today, the school presents a different picture. According to Headmistress Y.D. Bhavani, the SSC pass percentage has gone up to 80%, while the strength has more than doubled to 1,220.

“The school received nearly 2,800 applications for admissions, and all the applicants were from private schools seeking admission into our institution,” Ms. Bhavani told The Hindu.

“As many as 11 students secured more than 500 marks in the SSC examinations, while the highest score recorded was 574 marks,” she said.

Established with the initiative of HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, the model school has been developed as a pilot project at a cost of ₹16 crore. Built on 5.02 acres within the existing Zilla Parishad High School campus, it is being projected as a model for government schools in Andhra Pradesh.

The campus has technology-enabled classrooms with green boards, chart boards, Interactive Flat Panels (IFPs) for digital learning, and modern desks and chairs.
