Less than a week after performing their favourite songs on Akashavani Bhadravathi, the inmates of Shivamogga Central Prison have launched a fresh initiative — composing and performing songs to raise public awareness on municipal waste handling.

The Shivamogga City Corporation will broadcast these songs daily from waste collection vehicles operating across the city, amplifying their reach to the general public. Chandra Hemmady, one of the inmates, wrote six songs. The compositions were performed by him, Dadapeer, Thimmappa, Thippeswamy, Anand and Anil Kumar.

The songs are about segregating waste at source, adopting responsible disposal practices, reducing pressure on landfills, and so on.

P. Ranganath, Chief Superintendent of Prison, said the programme represented an innovative approach to inmate reformation. “This is the first such initiative of its kind in the State,” Mr. Ranganath said.

“By engaging prisoners in socially constructive work, we provide them with a purposeful activity that aids their rehabilitation while simultaneously serving the community’s environmental health,” he added, expressing confidence that the public would respond positively to the awareness campaign and cooperate with the city corporation in effective waste management.
