Nigeria Lawmakers Advance State Police Reform Bill
ABUJA, NIGERIA, June 11 - Nigeria’s parliament passed a constitutional bill on Thursday paving the way for each of its 36 states to establish and run its own police force alongside the federal Nigeria Police Force, a long-debated reform aimed at tackling worsening insecurity.
Nigeria's National Assembly has passed a constitutional amendment bill that will permit individual states to create and manage their own police departments. This move establishes a dual policing system, with state forces operating alongside the existing federal Nigeria Police Force. The reform, which has been under discussion for an extended period, is intended to address the country's escalating security challenges.
This reform aims to decentralize policing power, potentially improving responsiveness to local security threats across Nigeria's diverse regions.
