Upalokayukta initiates probe into encroachment of footpath by vendors in front of public library at Gundlupet

Phaneendra has initiated a suo motu inquiry into complaints of poor sanitary conditions, encroachment of pedestrian pathways, roadside vending and traffic-related problems in front of the public library in Gundlupet town. The probe has been initiated after the Upalokayukta took cognisance of a newspaper report that pointed out that footpaths in front of the library had been encroached upon by various vendors selling fast food, pani puri, meat, and other items. The report also highlighted foul odours owing to inadequate waste management and inconvenience to library users due to haphazard vehicle parking. The suo motu inquiry ordered by the Upalokayukta under Sections 7(2) and 9(3)(a) of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, 1984, noted that the issues mentioned in the media report require examination, as the conditions around the library are causing inconvenience to students, youth, and book lovers who visit the facility. Accordingly, directions have been given to issue notices to Saravana S., chief officer of the Gundlupet Town Municipal Council, Vijayakumar, police inspector of Gundlupet Town Police Station, and Jayaswamy, librarian of Gundlupet Public Library, treating them as respondents in the case. The Upalokayukta has directed the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to resolve the problems on and around the library premises and submit a report on the actions taken within four weeks. The next hearing on the matter has been scheduled for July 13.
