Specifically, the government aims to raise excise duty on cigarettes by 20 Tanzanian shillings per 1,000 units and introduce a 10 shilling per kilogram levy on all sugar, whether locally produced or imported.
The proposed changes, which require amendments to existing laws like the Excise Duty Act and the Sugar Act, are projected to generate an additional 7 billion Tanzanian shillings. This initiative is part of a larger government strategy to ensure consistent funding for universal healthcare access throughout the nation.
