Cartier, ‘the jeweller of kings’, has come to the NGV in a dazzling new exhibit
Founded in Paris 179 years ago, Cartier has fostered a legendary reputation as the creator of luxury goods for royalty, the aristocracy, film stars, and the generally wealthy. The National Gallery of Victoria is now showcasing a major exhibition of Cartier, the renowned French luxury house. Originally developed by London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the exhibit features nearly 400 items, including pieces owned by Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. The NGV has collaborated with Rotterdam-based design studios Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD to reimagine the display, with Marcelis drawing inspiration from Cartier's color palette and CLOUD creating light-filled structures based on the brand's geometric forms. The exhibition traces the evolution of Cartier's distinctive style, from its founding in Paris in 1847 to its international expansion by the founder's grandsons.
The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the historical craftsmanship and design evolution of a legendary jewelry house that has long been associated with royalty and high society.
