Children's participation in their own healthcare appointments remains low, despite evidence suggesting it leads to faster recovery and reduced anxiety. A recent study, focusing on pediatric palliative care, highlights that children communicate in numerous ways beyond spoken words, including sounds, gestures, and facial expressions. Researchers observed that even very ill children actively engaged in appointments every 90 seconds when their non-verbal cues were recognized. The study also found that adults can actively foster a child's involvement through various methods, such as play and gestures, ensuring even non-verbal children feel included.
Understanding and implementing these communication strategies can significantly improve the healthcare experience and outcomes for children, particularly those with serious illnesses.
