Shah: AFSPA to be removed from Northeast, barring few states next year

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, AFSPA, is slated for removal from most parts of Northeast India in the coming year. The exception will be for one or two states where the situation may still warrant its continuation. Shah also described a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the central government, Assam, and Nagaland concerning mineral oil exploration as a significant achievement. He stated this agreement overcomes the final obstacle to realizing Prime Minister Modi's objective of a developed Northeast region.
