Iran-born Engineer Gets Bail Before Trial on Drone Strike Tech Charges
BOSTON, June 11 - A U.S. judge on Thursday allowed an Iranian-born engineer to be released on bail just days before his trial on charges linked to a deadly drone attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan carried out by Iran-backed militants in 2024.
A U.S. judge has granted bail to Mahdi Sadeghi, an engineer with dual U.S.-Iranian citizenship, just days before his trial. Sadeghi faces charges related to illegally acquiring technology for navigation systems used in Iranian military drones. Prosecutors allege this technology was employed in a drone attack in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of three U.S. soldiers in January 2024.
Previously denied bail due to flight risk concerns, Sadeghi's release was approved after the judge considered the ongoing conflict in the region, which she stated makes returning to Iran less appealing. The judge also noted Sadeghi's expressed desire to remain in the United States with his family.
The decision highlights the complex legal and geopolitical factors influencing bail decisions in cases involving national security and international conflict.
