Maharashtra Govt Acts on Cab Driver Tip Demands
Over the past few days, incidents of drivers demanding additional tips or extra payments after accepting rides and cancelling the trips if such payments were not made, were being reported, the officials said.
Maharashtra's Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has ordered an investigation into app-based taxi services following reports of drivers coercing passengers into paying tips. The minister directed the transport commissioner to take action against companies whose drivers have been accused of demanding extra payments and canceling rides if tips are refused. This move comes after Kalyan MP Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde raised concerns about drivers exploiting passengers' difficulties for financial gain. The government plans to introduce a new policy for taxi aggregators to address these issues and ensure fair practices. Minister Sarnaik emphasized that customers have a right to transparent and safe services, condemning the drivers' actions as a violation of consumer rights.
This action addresses consumer protection concerns and aims to regulate the practices of ride-hailing services to prevent exploitation of passengers.
