This comes amidst rising xenophobic incidents in South Africa, which have displaced thousands of foreign nationals. The ZCTU argues that South Africa must be more direct with Zimbabwe regarding its political and economic trajectory to effectively curb irregular migration.
The union emphasized that persistent economic hardship and a lack of employment in Zimbabwe compel millions of citizens to seek opportunities abroad, making them vulnerable to violence. The ZCTU also called on the Zimbabwean government to address its own governance shortcomings, which are the root cause of citizens fleeing the country.
The ZCTU's statement highlights the interconnectedness of regional stability, economic conditions, and migration, underscoring the need for both internal reforms and candid bilateral relations to address the crisis.
