A Zimbabwean man, Edgar Maroto, 42, has been sentenced to two decades in prison by the Musina District Magistrate’s Court for attempting to smuggle explosives into South Africa. Maroto was apprehended at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on April 10 when authorities intercepted the truck he was driving.
During a search, officers discovered a significant quantity of explosives, including blasting cartridge tubes, cammex connector capsules, and detonator fuse reels, with an estimated street value of R400,000. Maroto was convicted of unlawful possession of explosives and violating the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, leading to his substantial prison term.
This conviction and sentence highlight the serious consequences of attempting to illegally transport dangerous materials across borders, reinforcing security measures at ports of entry.
