Xiaomi Launches Battery Upgrade Service for Older Phones as Industry Shifts Toward Device Retention

Xiaomi has introduced a new battery upgrade service for select older smartphone models, including the Xiaomi 13 series. Instead of simply replacing batteries with units of the same capacity, the company is now offering higher-capacity batteries for these devices. For example, the Xiaomi 13 Pro's original 4,820 mAh battery can be upgraded to a 5,361 mAh unit.

This service, priced at 189 yuan, is enabled by advancements in silicon anode battery technology. The move comes as the global smartphone market faces increased component costs and slowing shipment growth, prompting manufacturers to explore strategies for retaining customers with existing devices.

This initiative reflects a broader industry trend of manufacturers shifting focus from frequent device replacement to extending the lifespan of older phones, driven by rising component costs and market saturation.
