Pakistan's energy sector has seen a significant shift, with renewable, hydroelectric, and nuclear power sources now constituting over half of the nation's installed generation capacity. This marks the first time these indigenous resources have surpassed thermal power. The total installed capacity has grown to nearly 50,000 megawatts, with cleaner energy contributing 50.8% of the total.
During the first nine months of the fiscal year, these cleaner sources also accounted for 53.1% of actual electricity generation. This transition aligns with government policies aimed at enhancing energy security, affordability, and sustainability by reducing reliance on imported fuels. Meanwhile, electricity consumption saw a modest increase, driven by households and a strengthening industrial sector, while agricultural use declined due to increased solar adoption.
This development signifies a crucial step for Pakistan towards greater energy independence and environmental sustainability by prioritizing domestic resources over imported fossil fuels.
