China Approves First 6G Trial Spectrum, GSMA Forecasts China to Lead Global 6G Deployment

China has become the first nation in the world to officially approve 6G trial frequency spectrum, marking a major milestone in the global race toward next-generation telecommunications. The approval provides critical support for conducting technical experiments and accelerating the standardization process for 6G networks. According to a predictive study by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) on spectrum planning through 2040, China is positioned to remain at the forefront of 6G deployment. Speaking to CCTV Finance, GSMA Greater China President Si Han stated that China is expected to be "among the leading countries in 6G deployment," with penetration projected to reach 60% by 2035. She also highlighted that China will host the World Radiocommunication Conference in Shanghai next year, where global 6G spectrum allocation is expected to be finalized — another landmark event for the industry. Beyond the spectrum milestone, China is actively participating in global 6G standard-setting efforts and cultivating an innovation ecosystem. The country's information and communication technology sector has seen rapid advancement in foundational infrastructure for next-generation networks. The report also highlighted China's broader technological momentum. In commercial aerospace, the country now has over 600 commercial space enterprises, a 20% year-on-year increase. In 2025, China conducted 50 commercial space launches — 54% of total launches — and placed 311 commercial satellites into orbit. Reusable rocket technology has advanced with an innovative maritime mesh recovery system unique to China's approach. In the AI sector, China has over 6,000 AI enterprises, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. Major cloud providers' large model API call volumes now rank among the global first tier. Stanford's 2026 AI Index Report noted China's continued leadership in AI research paper publications, citation rates, and patent grants. The country's industrial robot production reached 773,074 units in 2025, up 28% year-on-year. These developments collectively underscore China's shift from isolated technological breakthroughs to a diversified innovation ecosystem spanning telecommunications, space, AI, and robotics — sectors that together are reshaping the country's technological competitiveness on the global stage.
