Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) leader G.K. Vasan said on Friday (June 12, 2026) that farmers were concerned because water had not been released from the Mettur dam on the customary date of June 12. He also urged the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to secure the release of Cauvery water from Karnataka.
In a statement, the former Union Minister also urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure uninterrupted three-phase power supply to farmers. He called for measures to support farmers who depend on water released from the Mettur dam.
Mr. Vasan contended that when water is not released from the Mettur dam, farmers are forced to rely on groundwater for irrigation, which affects the groundwater table and leads to higher electricity consumption.
