President Asif Ali Zardari has officially approved a bill that finalizes the legal steps for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). This approval follows the bill's passage through both the Senate and the National Assembly. The move signifies the completion of all necessary legal procedures for the national airline's sale.
The PIA was sold to a consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation Limited in December for Rs135 billion. The consortium plans to restructure the airline, expand its fleet, and enhance customer service, with the goal of eventually acquiring the remaining government shares to gain full control.
This development marks a significant step in the restructuring of Pakistan's national airline, aiming to improve its financial performance and operational efficiency.
