Telecom Namibia has signed an agreement with Angola’s Gabinete de Gestão do Programa Espacial Nacional (GGPEN) to test the use of the Angosat-2 satellite. The signing took place in Luanda on Thursday, after a proof-of-concept phase. Under the agreement, Telecom Namibia will conduct a pilot commercial trial to assess the technical performance, service capabilities and commercial viability of the Angosat-2 satellite under real operating conditions. The two parties plan to work towards the commercial launch of satellite services once the pilot phase is completed. Telecom Namibia board chairperson Fimanekeni Petrus says the project is about more than testing new technology. “This initiative reflects our commitment to expanding connectivity and ensuring that even the most remote communities can access reliable and scalable digital services,” he says. Telecom Namibia says the satellite service could benefit lodges, tourism establishments, mining operations, schools, farms, businesses and rural communities. Infrastructure located in Angola will support the satellite platform and integrate it with fibre and submarine cable systems. Telecom Namibia says the pilot phase will allow it to assess the performance and sustainability of satellite-enabled services before making a decision on long-term implementation. The signing ceremony was attended by Angola’s minister of telecommunications, information technologies and social communication, Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira, Namibian minister of information and communication technology Emma Theofelus and senior officials from Telecom Namibia and GGPEN The post Telecom tests Angola satellite to reach remote areas appeared first on The Namibian .
