1,000 HK restaurants get dog-friendly permits from July 9
The Hong Kong government has granted 1,000 restaurants the city’s first permits to allow dogs into their premises starting on July 9. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said on Friday that it “conducted an open balloting today and allocated 1,000 quotas for allowing dogs to enter food premises according to the ballot result.” Pixel, the HKFP news hound, welcomes the move. The Hong Kong government has approved permits for 1,000 restaurants to allow dogs on their premises, effective July 9. This marks the first time such permits have been issued in the city. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) conducted a lottery to allocate these permits among eligible establishments. The majority of the approved restaurants are distributed across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories, with Wan Chai having the highest concentration. Restaurants must display specific signage and adhere to regulations, including keeping dogs on leashes. This policy change follows an amendment to food business regulations earlier this year, relaxing a long-standing ban on pets in eateries. Over 2,200 applications were initially received for these permits.
Hong Kong is launching a new initiative allowing dogs in 1,000 restaurants, signaling a significant shift in public dining policies.
