Precautions being taken at T.N. border checkposts after Nipah virus case reported in Kerala

The Nilgiris district administration has tightened surveillance at border checkpoints to prevent any potential spread of Nipah virus into Tamil Nadu. The move comes in the wake of a preliminary test indicating a man in Kozhikode tested positive for the virus.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Nilgiris Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru confirmed steps had been taken at all border checkposts, particularly those along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Staff from the Health Department have been stationed at the Thaloor, Nadugani, Nambiarkunnu, Soladi, and Pattavayal checkposts to check for symptoms among travellers and tourists from Kerala.

As there was regular movement of people between the two States at the border checkposts, with residents from the Tamil Nadu side of the border regularly crossing into Kerala in search of work, additional steps are being taken in areas populated by migrant workers and necessary checks are being conducted, officials stated.

Government hospitals, clinics, primary health centres, and private hospitals have been told to report any signs of the illness to the Health Department. Visitors from Kerala showing any symptoms have also been urged to come forward and get treated voluntarily, the district administration said.

Ms. Tanneeru added that with precautionary steps being taken by the district administration, that there was no cause for worry among residents about the spread of Nipah virus in the district.
