The Communist Party of India (CPI) is not in alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu, said M. Veerapandian, State secretary of the CPI while speaking to journalists in Coimbatore today (June 11, 2026).
Mr. Veerapandian said that at present, there was no conducive environment in the State for the CPI to be part of the DMK-led alliance. “We will continue to travel with the Left parties. The CPI sees the DMK, AIADMK, and TVK as democratic forces. We cannot be part of the DMK-led alliance under the current circumstances. The situation is not allowing it.”
Renowned film director Bharathiraja (84), who died in Chennai yesterday, was laid to rest in his farm house in Theni district with full state honours.
The villagers, who recalled their association with Bharathiraja, said that he used to be affectionate and call each one of them by name. He used to help the children pursue education and during one of his visits in the recent years, he had enquired about an old friend, with whom he had been associated for over 60 years.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay who is in New Delhi attended the 11th governing council meeting of NITI Aayog chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy skipped the meeting this year too.
Praveen Chakravarty, the Congress nominee for the bye-election to the lone vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu was declared elected unopposed.
The vacancy arose following the resignation of AIADMK leader C.Ve. Shanmugam from the Upper House on May 7 after he was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Mailam constituency in Villupuram district.
