Brussels bans rental e-scooters from 2027

Brussels authorities have decided to prohibit the rental of electric scooters starting in 2027. This decision comes in response to a rising number of accidents involving these devices. The city also cited increasing disruption to other traffic participants and the misuse of rental e-scooters for criminal activities. In 2025, 666 individuals were injured in Brussels due to e-scooter-related incidents, a significant increase from the previous year. Poorly parked scooters frequently obstruct pedestrian and cyclist pathways. Prosecutors have noted the use of rental e-scooters in numerous shooting incidents last year. The contracts for the two current rental companies, Bolt and Dott, will not be renewed.
This policy change is significant as it addresses public safety concerns and urban mobility challenges posed by shared electric scooters.
