Tartu plant expands hazardous waste incinerator
A hazardous waste incineration plant in Tartu has expanded its capacity up to tenfold, aiming to handle up to 20,000 tons annually and address a national shortfall in disposal options.
A hazardous waste incineration plant in Tartu, Estonia, has significantly expanded its capacity, now able to process between 15,000 and 20,000 tons annually. This expansion addresses a national deficit in hazardous waste disposal options. The new facility, operated by Epler & Lorenz, can handle up to 15% of Estonia's hazardous waste. Infrastructure Minister Kuldar Leis highlighted the cost-effectiveness of domestic treatment compared to exporting waste. The plant's capacity was increased from approximately 2,000 tons per year to meet growing national needs. Environmental permits and best available technologies are in place to mitigate potential environmental impacts, particularly air pollutants.
The expansion of the Tartu hazardous waste incinerator is vital for Estonia's environmental management and self-sufficiency in waste disposal.
