The Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) is all set to launch its first-ever on-campus academic programme, emphasising the significance of interdisciplinary medical education in the State. A group of 15 students, with medical and allied health discipline background, will step into KUHS campus in July to be part of the first batch of M.Sc Medical Bioinformatics.

The MSc programme in Medical Bioinformatics is being launched under the School for Translational Health Sciences established on the campus of the University of Health Sciences. This is the first academic programme to be launched at the university’s headquarters at Mulangunnathukavu, and it is the first ever postgraduate programme in Medical Bioinformatics in Kerala, according to the Registrar of the university.

The programme, which is spread over four semesters, will focus on both theory and practical aspects while the fourth semester will be project-based. “Leading the way in healthcare is the convergence of medicine, biotechnology, and bioinformatics, areas that are rapidly reshaping global healthcare research and delivery,” said Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, Vice-Chancellor of KUHS. It is expected that this programme will usher in a new era in interdisciplinary medical education in the State as the programme emphasises skill development and hands-on training, he added.

For the first batch of M.Sc in Medical Bioinformatics, students were selected through an entrance examination from among graduates in various disciplines including Modern Medicine, Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Paramedical Sciences. Entrance examination was conducted for applicants who had secured a minimum of 50% marks in their degree programme from the Health University or an equivalent institution.
