The Shivamogga district administration has reopened Hulikal Ghat (Balebare Ghat) on State Highway 52 to light motor vehicles with immediate effect, two months after a fatal landslip forced the closure of the strategic hill pass on April 9.

The ghat, which connects the Shivamogga and Udupi districts, had been closed for vehicles following a landslip that claimed three lives and injured four others. They were all construction workers engaged in building a retaining wall — a protective measure against recurring landslips — when the incident occurred.

Additional District Commissioner V. Abhishek issued the order after consulting reports from the Public Works Department officials and the Superintendent of Police on the current stability and safety status of the ghat.
