A campaign to raise funds for Cuba has secured N$700 000 in donations from Namibians, which will be used for critical medical supplies. The Namibia National Solidarity Campaign in Support of Cuba was launched in April in response to the United States’ ongoing blockade of Cuba. “The Republic of Cuba has been under illegitimate and debilitating commercial and financial blockade by the United States (US) under successive administrations,” campaign chairperson Helmut Angula said on Thursday. A fuel blockade imposed by the US has worsened the situation in Cuba, with only one oil tanker reaching the country since January, according to Al Jazeera. “The blockade has brought about a humanitarian crisis for the people of Cuba. In this precarious situation, the Namibian people have joined the people of goodwill around the world to assist Cuba in their hour of need,” Angula said. He told the media that the campaign would proceed with procuring urgently-needed medical supplies with the N$700 000 raised. “Our immediate focus is to ensure that life-saving medical supplies reach those who need them. Every contribution by Namibians will make a big difference and save precious lives,” Angula said. He said the campaign would continue and that it had no specific fundraising goal, but that reaching N$1 million would be a big achievement. Responding to questions from the media, the chairperson said the logistics of how to send the medical supplies to Cuba had not yet been finalised. Ambassador of Cuba to Namibia Sergio de la Uz thanked Namibians for their contributions and said that the situation in Cuba remains dire. There are often only three hours of electricity per day, and hundreds of thousands of operations have been delayed due to the difficulties in running hospitals, he said.
