Google has filed a lawsuit against a Chinese cybercrime group known as Outsider Enterprise for allegedly using its Gemini AI to automate large-scale scam operations. The group reportedly offered 'phishing-as-a-service' via Telegram, providing instructions for creating fraudulent websites that mimicked legitimate platforms like Google, YouTube, and government agencies. These scams utilized Google's Gemini AI to generate nearly 300 different templates. Google states that these activities led to over 2.5 million scam text messages being sent to Android users, with approximately 55,000 messages sent in just two weeks last month. The network is linked to 9,000 fake websites and one million URLs, highlighting the significant reach of the AI-powered fraudulent campaign.
This legal action highlights the emerging challenge of generative AI being exploited for criminal activities and the efforts by tech companies to combat it.
